It’s that time of year again when everyone sets out to accomplish all their New Year’s resolutions. What’s wrong with that? Nothing – except that fewer than 10% of people actually achieve those goals.

Today we’ll cover several strategies you can use to boost your chances of weight loss success in the New Year. First, let’s talk about reframing your concept of goal-setting by thinking about the differences between setting an “intention” and making a “resolution”.

Intention…or Resolution?

Merriam-Webster defines the word intention as:

  • the thing that you plan to do or achieve: an aim or purpose
  • a determination to act in a certain way
  • what one intends to do or bring about

Resolution has varied meanings, including:

  • the act or process of resolving
  • something that is resolved; firmness of resolve
  • a formal expression of opinion, will, or intent voted by an official body or assembled group

To me, intention sounds more actionable and powerful than resolution – it feels enthusiastic, doesn’t it? If you think so too, start reframing your weight loss goal so you’re thinking about it as a real, tangible intention that you have for yourself.

Next, integrate the three strategies discussed below into your life – and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goal!

Understand the Value in Your Intention

When you’re working toward achieving your weight loss goal (or any other objective you might have), it’s vital for you to recognize the value in the whole process – instead of solely focusing on the end result.

So, you want to be thin and healthy…great! Now dig deeper and answer the all-important question: why? When you feel slim, reenergized and healthier, what would that mean for you, for your life? Make it real – think about all the areas in your life that would change or improve when you meet your goal.

Answering this question will help you stay the course when the going gets tough, plus you’ll have a constant reminder of all the great reasons you want to lose weight.

Make a Joint Resolution to be Healthy!

There’s nothing like the power of accountability to keep you on the right track. Enlist the help of at least one friend, mentor, coach, or acquaintance who you know you can trust to hold you accountable.

You’re more likely to stay motivated and inspired when you feel like a supportive person has your back. Don’t forget to reach out to that person if you find yourself struggling.

Or, you can buddy up – find someone else who is also on a similar weight loss path so you can both go through it together. You might even end up engaging in a little healthy competition 🙂

Plan ahead.

There’s that strategy again – if you’ve been following our blog, you know we’re always stressing the importance of planning. Not surprisingly, this tactic is a great one to implement if you’re serious about shedding pounds this year.

Why? Because one of the major reasons people ditch their resolutions is because they hit a roadblock. Truth be told, you can’t plan ahead for every roadblock – but you can still develop a basic outline of potential bumps in the road.

Better yet, once you’ve outlined what obstacles you might encounter, actually write down 1 or 2 sentences or a bulleted list explaining how you can navigate them.

What do you do when you hit a bump in the road, all else fails, and you fall off the track? First, understand that you don’t have to throw in the towel. So you slipped – it happens to the best of us sometimes. After all, no one is perfect.

Instead of dwelling on a shortcoming, forgive yourself and then move on – move ahead.
